From tumblr and [livejournal.com profile] lbilover via [livejournal.com profile] vaysh:

The point of this day is simple: on August 21th, writers and readers alike would go on AO3 (or any fanfiction website really [like: LiveJournal]), on Tumblr, and leave a comment on their favourite fics and/or send their authors a message about their works.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve already or never commented. It doesn’t matter if the author doesn’t know about this post. It doesn’t matter if the author already knows how much you love their work.

Just let writers know you love the fics they write for you, simple as that!

And well, don’t forget to keep leaving a kudos and a comment in the future, and make writers happy!

I'm going to try and spread a little love tomorrow. Maybe some of you will, too. ♥

I wrote Handerello and the Uncharming Prince, a remix of Draco's Dreams by [livejournal.com profile] elfflame.

When it was initially posted about a third of it went inexplicably missing, including the emotional climax, such as it is - please consider reading it (again), if you're fanficly inclined :-)

[livejournal.com profile] melusinahp wrote To The Quick (The Moonlight Remix) for me, a remix of No Exit.

Go and read it! It's awesome!!! (And also a bit incestuous, given that I wrote No Exit to her request in another fest a few years ago XD )

I think I've finally noticed a pattern in my fanac.

1. Become obsessed - by an actor, a character, a world, a work.
2. Become drawn into fanfic. Find a favourite pairing or two. Indulge in much reading.
3. Become drawn into obsession with one (or two) character(s). Obsessively read fanfic centred around them, regardless of pairing, rating, slash/het/gen.
4. Become interested in a new actor/character/world/work, usually through the shifting interest of my LJ/DW friends.
5. Go to 1.

So far since 2002 I've been through film!LotR/Elijah Wood, Harry Potter books/Draco Malfoy, bandom/Gerard Way and now I'm on Star Trek Reboot/James T. Kirk (with a toe dipped into Merlin), all thanks to LJ and similar sites.

It worries me that LJ seems to have reduced fandom to fanfic for me. When I used to go to Real Live SF Conventions, and contribute to Real Paper APAs and Fanzines, fandom was so much more than that. Yes, LJ is less expensive, but for all the potential diversity of fanac it should make possible, it's not as varied an experience as real life interaction. Because the virtual gives each individual total control over their environment, social media tends to have the effect of creating bubbles, which makes me sad. But it also has the effect of creating connections that would otherwise not have occurred, and allowing a means of maintaining many such connections at once, which makes me happy.

In many ways, reading lists on LJ and the like are ongoing, virtual fanzines, with ever changing content, and constantly updating comments. I do miss the ink and paper, though.

I just transferred all my original creative writing projects to springnote.com. Now to do the same with my fanfic WiPs!

ETA: Having done the above, I now know that, having thought I had 10 languishing WiPs, there are only really two that I care about: Memories and Secrets (for which I need a much better title) and The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. This is a good thing! This means that I may actually finish them!!! \o/

ETA2: I've activated my AO3 account, and am gradually putting all my fic there. I'm keeping the more vanilla stuff up at Skyehawke, too; the real positive here is that being able to host kinky, kinky stuff at AO3 means I can close down my Journal Fen account! Yey for fewer journals*! Yey for no longer tangentially supporting FW!

* Although Greatest Journal going down means I lost an awesome essay on the Malfoys and why JKR was such a bitch to Slytherin house that I was working on. Meh. I can work it out again.

...I'm reading SF and fantasy voraciously, buying comic books and in full-time education... *scratches head*

ETA: Comix what I have bought yesterday at this shop --
  • 'Beasts of Burden' 1 (a bit 'the Buffy Scooby Gang have adventures with demons', but they're dogs! \o/)
  • 'Umbrella Academy: Dallas'
  • 'Aldebaran: Catastrophe'.

The one who seduced you and fucked you over and broke your heart in a million pieces and laughed about it:
British Reclaiming

The old flame you don't see very often any more but whom you still really enjoy getting together with for a few drinks and maybe a pleasant nostalgic romp in the sheets:
SF fandom

The mysterious dark gothy one whom you used to sit up with talking until 3 a.m. at weird coffeehouses and with whom you were quite smitten until you realized he really was fucking crazy:
apa fandom

The one you spent a whole weekend in bed with and who drank up all your liquor, and whom you'd still really like to fuck again although you're relieved he doesn't actually live in town:
LOLCats

The steady:
Harry Potter

The one you repeatedly cheat on your steady with:
bandom

The alluring stranger whom you've flirted with at parties but have never gotten really serious with:
Babylon 5

The one you hang out with and have vague fantasies about maybe having a thing with but ultimately you're just good buddies 'cause the friendship is there but the chemistry ain't:
Dr. Who / Torchwood

The one your friends keep introducing you to and who seems like a hell of a cool guy except it's never really gone anywhere:
Supernatural

The one you slept with on the rebound who still smiles at you, yet you have no interest in any more:

The one who's slept with all your friends, and you keep looking at him and thinking, "Him? How the hell did he land all these cool babes?":
Star Trek: TOS

The one your friend has fallen for like a ton of bricks and whom she keeps babbling to you about on the phone for hours, and you'd be happy for her except you just know it's going to end badly:
Neon Genesis Evangelion

Characters you would shag, gacked from [livejournal.com profile] snakey. (ETA: I've shifted the ones I've not watched/read to the bottom of the list.)

If you'd shag them put the name in bold.
If you'd shag them after a few drinks put the name in italics.
If you wouldn't shag or don't know who they are, leave as is.
If you wouldn't shag them at gunpoint, cross the name out.

Add one or more character names and/or fandoms of your own. Once the list gets long enough to be unwieldy (use your judgment) start removing one name for every name you add.

The Rules:

1. Leave me a casual comment of no particular significance, like a lyric to your current favorite song, your favorite kind of sandwich, or maybe your favorite game. Any remark, meaningless or not.
2. I will respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. Update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in your own post.
5. When others respond with a desultory comment, you will ask them five questions

[livejournal.com profile] wildestranger">

1. What do you like most about Gerard Way?

EVERYTHING!!! His smile, his eyes, his cute cheeks, his success in getting clean and sober and his openness about it, his range - from utterly camp to extremely intense, serious and (yes) earnest, his voice (yes gods, that's a beautiful voice), the way he kisses/gropes/fondles/humps Frank on stage and the reason he does it, the fact that he cares so much about fans, that he genuinely wants to Save Lives, that he's just as big a dorky geek as the rest of us, the fact that he got off his arse and did something. Um, do you want me to go on? Because I could, all day if necessary...

2. How do you think the HP fandom will be in a year's time?

I'm not sure. I think there will probably be fewer teenaged fan-fic writers, because many of them will have gone on to the Next Big Thing, or grown up a bit (or moved into bandom, where all the cool people go XD ). I think the dedicated 21+ fans will continue to be so, with a normal attrition rate of gafiations.

3. What do you think about rain? Like it, hate it, ignore it?

At the moment, I'm not too keen on it, because it's dripping into the kitchen, and also we are without car, so I have to walk 2 miles across country (seriously across country, farm track and cows and sheep and everything) to get to the bus. I have rediscovered that waterproof clothes are only so waterproof.

I do like gentle rain, though, and I like that we have a constant supply of water to flush the loo with from our rain water collection tank, and that we could, if anything ever happened to the spring our water comes from, probably supply all our water needs from rain water.

4. What aspect of your own writing gives you most satisfaction?

When I surprise myself with a turn of phrase or a piece of imagery, and when I'm just there in the scene, writing down what I / the characters are seeing, smelling, hearing, tasting...

5. Is fandom a female space?

You know how to ask a tough question! I would say that slash fandom is... women's space? Although the meaning is rather different from how it was and is used in feminist and queer women's circles, it's the nearest I can get. I can't wrap my head around how a space can be female (which is a descriptor of primary and secondary sexual characteristics of living organisms having sexual reproduction). Feminised is a bit closer, but that implies that the space was masculine to start with... ::grinds teeth:: Why do we have such inadequate language around gender?!

I've put all my fanfic (from 2003 to the present) up at my JF account. All my fics are there - please read the header post (dated 2020) and all the warnings before proceeding to read any of them ;-)

These were asked here, so I'm answering here, as well as at JF (and GJ and Scribblit).

1. Comment to this post with something interesting/exciting/weird/boring about yourself and I will ask you five questions.
2. Answer the questions in your own journal.
3. Invite others to play.
