For a heterosexist, heteronormative, Hollywood rom com, it was really well done. The lead (Anna Faris) and her supporting actor (Chris Evans, who, yes because of my SteveRogersandBuckyBarnes obsession was the whole reason I was watching the film) did a really, really nice job. The running gags were reasonably funny. The family interactions were, as far as these things go, believable-ish. It was about as feminist as a story about finding 'the [heterosexual] one' could be.

But the patness and the platitudes and the middle classness / privilege and the whiteness, my gods the whiteness, and aforementioned heterosexism and heteronormativity have left me feeing a bit down.

ellie_nors: (dawn attack!)

Been watching quite a few lately.

The Force Awakens was good. Not as good as it could have been. Much better than it might have been. I adored Rey, and Finn; and Poe Dameron has to be the most Hufflepuff Huffer who ever Puffed. I also adored Kylo Ren (and the Emo Kylo Ren Twitter account is the best thing ever).
Here be spoilers... )

The Martian was amazing. Just... ALL the feels. Matt Damon. Wow, Matt Damon. I always forget how much I love his acting, and then I see him in something new and I'm blown away all over again. And I'm pretty convinced he deliberately played / was deliberately directed to play his character, Mark Watney, as gay or bisexual. (I've not read the book, so I don't know if that's part of the original text.) If so, to have a queer character be the main character of a film, and for it not to be a plot point, nor for queer-coding to indicate that he's the bad guy, nor for his sexual orientation to be referred to in any other way is fucking amazing.

The Big Short. OMFG, watch this film. I don't care if it's strictly accurate to what actually happened in every detail of the 2008 economic collapse; it's a fucking important, and absolutely hilarious, film that should be required watching.
