I wrote Handerello and the Uncharming Prince, a remix of Draco's Dreams by [livejournal.com profile] elfflame.

When it was initially posted about a third of it went inexplicably missing, including the emotional climax, such as it is - please consider reading it (again), if you're fanficly inclined :-)

[livejournal.com profile] melusinahp wrote To The Quick (The Moonlight Remix) for me, a remix of No Exit.

Go and read it! It's awesome!!! (And also a bit incestuous, given that I wrote No Exit to her request in another fest a few years ago XD )

With the imminent arrival of the final movie adaptations of the world wide phenomenon of Harry Potter, it is time for the sociological imagination to be cast upon the Wizarding World. Like The Psychology of Harry Potter and The Philosophy of Harry Potter (previously published works with which we have no affiliation), The Sociology of Harry Potter will be a collection of essays examining the series from a disciplinary perspective.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:
  • Wizard society, culture, socialization, conformity/deviance
  • the Wizard criminal justice system
  • education
  • stratification, inequality, race, class, gender, sexuality, interpersonal relationships, group relations, prejudice/discrimination
  • family
  • media
  • medicine, mental health
  • leisure & recreation
  • military, government, law & public policy
  • capitalism, work
  • aging/life course
  • collective behavior, social movements
  • emotions, memory
  • human rights, non-human rights
  • labour
  • religion, social aspects of death, dying & bereavement
  • art & visual culture
  • environmental issues
  • body & embodiment, etc.

Prospective contributors should send an Owl to the editors at RavenclawSociology@gmail.com by October 17, 2010 briefly describing their essay idea, what sociological theories and/or literature it would draw on, and indicating whether they have read the books, seen the movies, or enjoyed both.

Proposals will be reviewed based on originality, depth of knowledge of the Wizarding World, and grounding in sociological scholarship. Preference will be given to those who have both read the books and seen the movies.

***This project is NOT in association with or authorized by J.K. Rolling, her US or UK publishers, Warner Brothers, Universal Studios, the American or British Sociological Associations, or any other official Harry Potter or Sociology related or trade-marked entity.***

A child with magical ability, regardless of whether their parents are Muggles or wizards or a combination thereof, is called a witch or wizard.

A child without magical ability born to parents who are wizards is called a Squib.

What do you call a child without magical ability, born to parents one of whom is a wizard and one of whom is a Muggle? Are they called a Muggle, a Squib, or some other name not yet divulged to the world by JKR?

ETA: is it just me, or are LJ's servers really flakey this evening?

You scored as Luna Lovegood

You are Luna Lovegood. You daydream and often seem to be drifting off into your own world. You have very strong opinions that many agree are not logical. You place a lot of faith in these beliefs. Possibly, you see more than what meets the eye. You are very accepting of others. You may have only a few close friends because you refuse to sacrifice your opinions and true self for social graces.

The Rules:

1. Leave me a casual comment of no particular significance, like a lyric to your current favorite song, your favorite kind of sandwich, or maybe your favorite game. Any remark, meaningless or not.
2. I will respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. Update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in your own post.
5. When others respond with a desultory comment, you will ask them five questions

[livejournal.com profile] wildestranger">

1. What do you like most about Gerard Way?

EVERYTHING!!! His smile, his eyes, his cute cheeks, his success in getting clean and sober and his openness about it, his range - from utterly camp to extremely intense, serious and (yes) earnest, his voice (yes gods, that's a beautiful voice), the way he kisses/gropes/fondles/humps Frank on stage and the reason he does it, the fact that he cares so much about fans, that he genuinely wants to Save Lives, that he's just as big a dorky geek as the rest of us, the fact that he got off his arse and did something. Um, do you want me to go on? Because I could, all day if necessary...

2. How do you think the HP fandom will be in a year's time?

I'm not sure. I think there will probably be fewer teenaged fan-fic writers, because many of them will have gone on to the Next Big Thing, or grown up a bit (or moved into bandom, where all the cool people go XD ). I think the dedicated 21+ fans will continue to be so, with a normal attrition rate of gafiations.

3. What do you think about rain? Like it, hate it, ignore it?

At the moment, I'm not too keen on it, because it's dripping into the kitchen, and also we are without car, so I have to walk 2 miles across country (seriously across country, farm track and cows and sheep and everything) to get to the bus. I have rediscovered that waterproof clothes are only so waterproof.

I do like gentle rain, though, and I like that we have a constant supply of water to flush the loo with from our rain water collection tank, and that we could, if anything ever happened to the spring our water comes from, probably supply all our water needs from rain water.

4. What aspect of your own writing gives you most satisfaction?

When I surprise myself with a turn of phrase or a piece of imagery, and when I'm just there in the scene, writing down what I / the characters are seeing, smelling, hearing, tasting...

5. Is fandom a female space?

You know how to ask a tough question! I would say that slash fandom is... women's space? Although the meaning is rather different from how it was and is used in feminist and queer women's circles, it's the nearest I can get. I can't wrap my head around how a space can be female (which is a descriptor of primary and secondary sexual characteristics of living organisms having sexual reproduction). Feminised is a bit closer, but that implies that the space was masculine to start with... ::grinds teeth:: Why do we have such inadequate language around gender?!

Not much, all told - in fact only four fics in total and a pathetic 2000-ish words for NaNoWriMo - but what I did write I'm quite pleased with.

Black Flowers - Harry/Draco, PG13, creature!fic, written for HPQfaC, sponsored by [livejournal.com profile] melusinahp.

Unexpected - Snape/Hermione, PG, written as an extremely belated birthday gift for [livejournal.com profile] bekijane.

No Exit - Harry/Draco, NC17, creature!fic, written for [livejournal.com profile] melusinahp for the HD Holidays Last Hurrah.

Stand by Me - Harry/Draco, PG, mpreg, written for [livejournal.com profile] illianor for the HD Inspired mpreg exchange.

I haven't been reccing many stories from the fests this year, but this one, this one...

Elegy for Vincent Crabbe: Dance Suite in Five Movements for Viola and Marimba (rated NC17 for sex)

This story is so beautifully paced. Just gorgeous, and oh so very believable to me.

I'm squeeing along with everyone else at the revelation by JKR that Dumbledore is gay, but my reasons may be a bit different from most people.

Dumbledore being gay is such a huge gay-positive statement, far more so than any other character being gay, because Dumbledore is a headmaster, and not just any old headmaster, but the headmaster of the only school in the British Wizarding world. He has responsibility for almost all the [eta]British[/eta] Wizarding world's children.

This is really radical stuff.

One of the most common and most pernicious false beliefs about queer people, particularly about gay men, is that they are 'a danger to children'. Here is the good character in the canon HP universe, the only one who has spent his whole life protecting and caring for and educating children, and he's gay.

In that context, I don't even care that his love for Grindelwald was unrequited. I don't doubt for a moment that he's had other, entirely consummated, loves in his long lifetime. JKR rocks!

I'm not sure what I think about this. I generally despise theme parks on principle, but look at who's designing it.

It's a long time since I read this book. My impressions this time:

1. There are too many '...'s in the reported speech.
2. The adults are suitably incomprehensible to the 11-year old protagonist and his friends.
3. There is very little actual character development.
4. There is sometimes too much tell and not enough show.
5. There are lots of bullies in this universe - Vernon, Petunia, Dudley, Hagrid, Snape.
6. Draco is very cute.

A/N: Written for [livejournal.com profile] hpqfac (Harry Potter Quills for a Cause - 'proving that hot monkey sex can stop AIDS'), sponsored by [livejournal.com profile] melusinahp. I used the lines of Teardrop by Massive Attack/Liz Fraser as prompts, one for each day of February - see after the fic for the lyrics. I really enjoyed writing this and I hope you enjoy reading it. I've given it a tiny bit of a wash and brush-up, so it may read slightly differently in some parts than you remember it from its day by day appearance.
