What better way to celebrate my return to LJ?! :-D

I just transferred all my original creative writing projects to springnote.com. Now to do the same with my fanfic WiPs!

ETA: Having done the above, I now know that, having thought I had 10 languishing WiPs, there are only really two that I care about: Memories and Secrets (for which I need a much better title) and The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. This is a good thing! This means that I may actually finish them!!! \o/

ETA2: I've activated my AO3 account, and am gradually putting all my fic there. I'm keeping the more vanilla stuff up at Skyehawke, too; the real positive here is that being able to host kinky, kinky stuff at AO3 means I can close down my Journal Fen account! Yey for fewer journals*! Yey for no longer tangentially supporting FW!

* Although Greatest Journal going down means I lost an awesome essay on the Malfoys and why JKR was such a bitch to Slytherin house that I was working on. Meh. I can work it out again.

The "You Should Write..." Meme!

Come and comment on my thread and tell me what you think I should write next!

(Um, other than the next 14,800 words of my dissertation...)
ellie_nors: (gerard)
The Rules:

1. Leave me a casual comment of no particular significance, like a lyric to your current favorite song, your favorite kind of sandwich, or maybe your favorite game. Any remark, meaningless or not.
2. I will respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. Update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in your own post.
5. When others respond with a desultory comment, you will ask them five questions

[livejournal.com profile] wildestranger">

1. What do you like most about Gerard Way?

EVERYTHING!!! His smile, his eyes, his cute cheeks, his success in getting clean and sober and his openness about it, his range - from utterly camp to extremely intense, serious and (yes) earnest, his voice (yes gods, that's a beautiful voice), the way he kisses/gropes/fondles/humps Frank on stage and the reason he does it, the fact that he cares so much about fans, that he genuinely wants to Save Lives, that he's just as big a dorky geek as the rest of us, the fact that he got off his arse and did something. Um, do you want me to go on? Because I could, all day if necessary...

2. How do you think the HP fandom will be in a year's time?

I'm not sure. I think there will probably be fewer teenaged fan-fic writers, because many of them will have gone on to the Next Big Thing, or grown up a bit (or moved into bandom, where all the cool people go XD ). I think the dedicated 21+ fans will continue to be so, with a normal attrition rate of gafiations.

3. What do you think about rain? Like it, hate it, ignore it?

At the moment, I'm not too keen on it, because it's dripping into the kitchen, and also we are without car, so I have to walk 2 miles across country (seriously across country, farm track and cows and sheep and everything) to get to the bus. I have rediscovered that waterproof clothes are only so waterproof.

I do like gentle rain, though, and I like that we have a constant supply of water to flush the loo with from our rain water collection tank, and that we could, if anything ever happened to the spring our water comes from, probably supply all our water needs from rain water.

4. What aspect of your own writing gives you most satisfaction?

When I surprise myself with a turn of phrase or a piece of imagery, and when I'm just there in the scene, writing down what I / the characters are seeing, smelling, hearing, tasting...

5. Is fandom a female space?

You know how to ask a tough question! I would say that slash fandom is... women's space? Although the meaning is rather different from how it was and is used in feminist and queer women's circles, it's the nearest I can get. I can't wrap my head around how a space can be female (which is a descriptor of primary and secondary sexual characteristics of living organisms having sexual reproduction). Feminised is a bit closer, but that implies that the space was masculine to start with... ::grinds teeth:: Why do we have such inadequate language around gender?!

Not much, all told - in fact only four fics in total and a pathetic 2000-ish words for NaNoWriMo - but what I did write I'm quite pleased with.

Black Flowers - Harry/Draco, PG13, creature!fic, written for HPQfaC, sponsored by [livejournal.com profile] melusinahp.

Unexpected - Snape/Hermione, PG, written as an extremely belated birthday gift for [livejournal.com profile] bekijane.

No Exit - Harry/Draco, NC17, creature!fic, written for [livejournal.com profile] melusinahp for the HD Holidays Last Hurrah.

Stand by Me - Harry/Draco, PG, mpreg, written for [livejournal.com profile] illianor for the HD Inspired mpreg exchange.

I've been trying to do this meme, and the only thing I can come up with is:

1. Draco Malfoy has at least one panic attack.

So I'm turning the question around.

How do you know when you're reading one of my stories?
ellie_nors: (Default)
...is finished.

ellie_nors: (Slytherin)
This time from [livejournal.com profile] elfwreck. So much yes.
ellie_nors: (Draco)
I've just been re-reading some of my own fic (I do that on occasion) and found one I'd forgotten about but which I discover I like more than I thought. I wrote it as a way of having a holiday when I couldn't in real life, and the ending makes me smile.

As Good As A Rest
Draco/Neville, post-war, R.

WRITER'S MEME: Sometimes it's ok to pimp yourself out. Post a list of the top five favorite fics you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.

1. In Your Tower. Arthurian. Guinevere/Morgaine. G.
I love this because it's the piece that got me writing again.

2. Salt and Sweet and Spice. Wraeththu universe, Kamagrian world. OC/OC. NC-17.
This was the first proper story I'd written since school. Not my best work, but not too bad, either.

3. Magic. Harry Potter. Ginny/Luna. G/PG.
I'm still amazed I wrote this. I have fond memories of it - it got such a lovely response.

4. Spring in the Floating World. Harry Potter. Snape/?(canonMC). NC-17. Worth reading the author's notes (bottom of page).
This is the only time I've written Snape, and I'm pleased with the job I did. I also enjoyed doing a little bit of research and creating his living space in my head.

5. Carpe Diem. Harry Potter. Harry/Draco. R. Again, worth reading the author's notes (bottom of page).
I always cite this one when asked for my favourite of my fics. It was such a lot of fun to write and lifted me out of my own depression a little at the time.

I hereby tag EVERYONE on my flist. Tell me about your own writing that you love.

Today I realised where I've been going wrong with my approach to plot. I'd always thought that I 'couldn't do' plots, that they were beyond me, my mind just didn't work that way.

Writing fanfic has helped me to realise something: a plot is simply a way to bring characters together and push them apart; to create situations in which they have more or less meaningful social, intellectual and emotional interactions.

I like Creating Situations, especially when I can do it from the safety of the study.
